Living With Epilepsy In South Africa
The idea of 'evil spirits taking over a person's body when having a seizure' has been brought into our South African culture through stories and myths over many lifetimes so the cultural thoughts about epilepsy are so widespread that even family members often hold these ideas about the person in the back of their minds. I fell under the 'person with epilepsy' category for over fifteen years, and experienced the personal trauma of: - Not having enough medical and informative support during seizures - Being switched from one medication to another - Undergoing neurological surgery to stop the seizures I came to realize that the people of South Africa truly deserve to know more about epilepsy and their medical choices. Therefore, the aim of my story is to help educate people, their families and their caregivers, from all walks-of-life, about the choices available to them. By doing this I hope to empower them to take responsibility for their lives and to create a better understanding about this highly complex and very often misunderstood condition, epilepsy. - Lynn Jansen Van Rensburg
